Nokia was one of the main creators of GSM Technology (Global System for Mobile Communications), the future design technology which can deal with both simultaneously, Voice and Data traffic. Nordic Mobile Telephony was the first in the World who created the Mobile Telephony Standards that made the telecommunication with International Roaming facilities, to have more facilities while using mobile phones.

Nokia was very involved in this movement of the development of GSM technology, which was first operated in 1987. Nokia phones were the first ones who delivered and set up the GSM Network in 1989. The first GSM call was made by Nokia phones on 1st July, 1991.

After the successful launch of GSM, Nokia phones were in big demand. The first model they produced was Nokia 1011 launched in 1992. The model number was designed in accordance to the launching date of 10th November. Later on in 1994, Nokia developed a signature Nokia Tune for Nokia phones first installed in 2100 series phones.

GSM brought a high quality voice call and was easily accessible when required an International Roaming. In addition GSM technology also brought the Instant messaging service (SMS) that played the greatest contribution in the establishment of mobile phones industry around the world. According to the reports, there are around 3 billion mobile phone users in the world till mid of 2008. It is now available in every country of the world.
