With the release of the Droid, Motorola has done at least one great thing, released its most attractive phone yet. Although Motorola has brought nothing more than disappointment for the last couple of years with technology releases that held no comparisons to the other big names in the phone industry, Droid could very well prove all critics wrong or could prove them right! In any case, the phone sure looks great and in this industry the looks do matter. Besides, you could always expect Motorola to get technology to look good if not anything else; point in reference the Razr phones that made carrying cell phones sexy.

The Motorola Droid is actually quite defiant where its design is concerned compared to the stereotypical smart phone devices that are flooding the phone industry now with the smooth edges and dark colors and their sophisticated air. The droid on the other hand seems to believe in playing rich the old school way. Unlike the other expensive smart phones, this one has sharp edges and a hardy metallic material to go with it, though the material also has some plastic combined in it for good measure. Along with that hefty and big-guy command that the phone has, there is also the gold highlights along the phone to make it a little bling-bling. Apart from all this, the phone is suddenly modern with its soft touch keys and buttons. Overall the phone looks great and is a good change from the typical design of the other touch-screen phones.

The structure of the phone is built in tow separate parts. There is the wide and large screen on top made of glass and underneath there is a slide out of for a keyboard for the phone which is longer than the screen, however the design is made in such a way that it looks great being angularly longer on the lower half to accommodate the keyboard below the screen which slides out for use. The screen on top however takes up most of the space of the phone as it is 3.7 inches in diameter; however at the bottom of the screen are four touch screen buttons for the basic back, search, home, menu functions for the phone. In spite of those four buttons at the bottom, the screen seems to be taking up the entire space of the phone above which adds to the modern look that the phone commands.

The screen is actually the one that moves up and fixes itself atop the keyboard rather than the keyboard sliding out for use. So with a little force to be applied (one of the disadvantages it faces against other such phones which slide out into place and fix themselves) the top screen slides out and then fixes in its position on top of the keyboard which can then be used simultaneously. The keyboard is pretty integrated though it is quite wide, with hardly any spacing between the keys. The five way controls are to the right side of the keyboard that just out and will take some getting used to, but is quite handy when you get the hang of it. Also at the bottom of the five way controls is the mic hole which is pretty small but actually quite powerful.

The back of the Droid is actually designed quite well although the design is actually very simplistic and minimal. It holds the 5megapixek camera at the back along with a flash which are all hidden along with a speaker at the back by a slide which has gold grille highlights to make the back of the phone look better than most of the backs of phones.

How large a phone is, actually matters and Droid has much to show off where that area of concern is taken into question. It is slightly thicker than the iPhone 3GS but the body of the Droid is actually quite narrow compared to the iPhone. However, the point that wins the case is that that a large high resolution screen with a wide keyboard are all clubbed together in a phone which is not that thick after all. This is what makes the phone a great engineering feat.

Apart from the design features, the software too is pretty good. The navigation speed of the phone is high and there is hardly any lagging and so the software speaks for itself. Another great feature on the phone that is surely one feature that is yet unbeatable by other phones is the sound quality of the Droid. The output through the speaker, the headphone for music or phone calls is actually crystal. Also, the turn-by-turn maps which takes navigation through cellular devices a whole new era is also one of the bug features of the phone.
