NFC is a wireless technology that allows data to be transmitted over short distances, usually about 5 centimeters, although antennas may extend the range to as much as 20 centimeters. This technology is mainly used in mobile phones, since it relies on close proximity. NFC is currently used in three ways: Emulating contact-less plastic cards, reading passive RFID tags, and in peer-to-peer mode for communicating and exchanging data in both directions.

In its most basic form, NFC communications between devices can be initiated by the active device, and the other, passive device (the target) is powered by the initiator’s RF field. So, target devices can be quite simple, including plastic cards, tags, keychains, or even adhesive stickers. Even more interesting is the technology’s potential for peer-to-peer communications, which introduces a new level of functionality.

Why did it take so long?

The three-way standoff between phone makers, operators, and merchants has finally ended. Phone makers had been hesitant to include the chips in handsets, fearing repercussions from phone operators. Worse, operators didn’t request the chips since merchants weren’t equipped with terminals to accept payments through the platform; of course, merchants and small business owners had no interest in buying terminals since phones didn’t have chips installed.

But now, large mobile operators and other heavyweight adopters are moving to stop the bleeding caused by Apple and Google, who have managed to tap into their revenue streams via their smartphone apps.

Mobile operators themselves plan to tap into the same revenue stream by requiring NFC-equipped SIM cards in handsets, as a way of accessing those mobile customers. It’s expected to be a huge market—At least €110 billion according to some industry estimates. It seems that we’ve reached the tipping point for NFC, thanks to competitive forces in the market.

What can NFC do?

Currently, NFC can be used for applications such as ticketing and boarding passes in public transportation, aviation, and toll road systems. Further, devices can serve in the form of plastic credit or debit cards. And, devices can be used to read RFID tags simply by waving them over the tag; likewise, Bluetooth devices may be synergistic with NFC technology. In the near future, NFC is expected to power more ticketing applications, be used for keyless-access applications, provide forms of identity documentation, and many new forms of mobile and e-commerce.

What’s the downside?

The usefulness of a proximity platform requires that systems be designed for security and reliability; otherwise, even casual contact might trigger an unwanted transaction. Worse, the potential for privacy and security issues is greater for proximity-activity chips in portable devices such as phones. Considering the possibility of tampering, cloning and similar mischief, it’s likely that NFC platforms will become the target of hackers and thieves seeking to exploit the vulnerabilities of portable, radio-based systems.

Finally, the last piece in the NFC puzzle, the number of retail terminals capable of interfacing with NFC chips, is rising but the terminals haven’t yet become widespread. Industry trade groups estimate there are about 500,000 contact-less terminals in the U.S. capable of “reading” NFC chips in phones the same way as they currently read plastic cards. Still, when compared with the 6 million legacy card readers in the United States, more public acceptance will be needed to spur complete adoption of this important technology.

In summary, NFC technology shows great promise, and some mobile customers are already holding the technology in their hands. Yet, the biggest growth is still to come, as the number of NFC-capable terminals increases and exciting new apps continue to be developed.

Clearview recently announced plans to offer a 4G wireless handset later in 2010. The new WiMax handsets are expected to be available to retail customers throughout the nation later in the year. The first of these devices will be powered by the Google Android system, and it will feature both 3G and 4G capabilities.  Built by Samsung, this device is said to be optimized for high quality video streaming, as well as communication of both voice and data. The second device is built by HTC, and it is also a 3G and 4G enabled device.  Both of these handsets are expected to be compatible with both the Spring networks and the Clearwire network.

Clearwire is quickly becoming a formidable player in the 4G and 3G wireless marketplaces.  In public statements Clearwire has said that it expects future wireless devices to focus more on data and less on voice, and the company is positioning itself to take advantage of that transition.  While it is true that Clearview does not have a voice network of its own, it is also true that the company should be able to use the high capacity of its WiMax network to deliver not only 4G handsets but VoIP services as well.

Sprint has also revealed the pricing for its new 4G enabled Smartphone. The HTC Evo will be priced at $299.99, or $199.99 after the $100 mail in rebate the company will be offering.  That price requires the standard two year service agreement common for smart phones of this kind.  That standard service agreement is Sprint’s Everything Data or their Business Advantage Messaging and Data plans – these plans start at $69.99 a month and come with unlimited internet surfing, calling and texting on the Sprint network.
