Blackberry Protect Now Available as an Open Beta

Last July Blackberry released a new service as a closed Beta project. It was called Blackberry Protect and was introduced as a way to help Blackberry users deal with problems such as your phone being stolen or lost. Beta users have been offering suggestions and testing the service since July and now it is open to all Blackberry users but is still a Beta version so there could be some bugs and some features may need further testing. Nonetheless it is an exciting development for those of us who are security-minded and most Blackberry users are. Making the most secure mobile phone out there even more secure is quite a feat.

Features of the service can be seen on the Blackberry Protect official page and include locational as well as security features. Users can locate their phone via GPS or triangulate its location with cell phone towers. The phone can be remotely locked and a password added so if your phone is stolen it becomes unusable. A loud ring feature allows you to make the phone ring at the highest volume level even if it is in silent mode.

Backup features include being able to remotely backup or delete everything on the phone including the memory card. Also there are settings to automatically backup contacts, calendar, bookmarks, and text messages daily, weekly, or monthly OTA (Over the Air) i.e. using your mobile phone’s data plan. Data backup is incremental, meaning that it only updates new items, older items that are unchanged don’t need to be backed up which is a waste of resources (and your data plan!). You can also restrict the backups to only occur when you have wi-fi or instruct the phone not to backup when you are roaming. Lastly, you can restore all this information wirelessly to a new Blackberry device when you upgrade or replace your phone.

Blackberry Protect is available in the app market and can be used with multiple devices. Currently it is available for download in the US and some markets in South America.
